Q: Is there a problem when the blood pressure readings are very different in both arms

My 77 yr old Father takes his blood pressure some what regular. He told me he thought the machine was broke, because he could take his blood pressure in one arm and it was very high 220/109 and he took his blood pressure in the other arm and it was 143/81. I don't think the blood pressure machine is broke. What could cause this flucuation in his arms?

Im not positive but are you sure he's not mis reading it?there can be a slight difence ibeliee espically in your left arm a it's closer to your heart and it would give a stronger reading the further away from the heart the less it could show up,but if he's getting a pressure that hiht he should se his doctor,First If I was you I would go over yourself and take it for him.Jim
