My mother was prescribed Norvasc in Aug. Her feet are swelling, she has blurred vision and dizziness. Are these side effects? I consulted her heart doctor whose nurse said that he wanted her to increase dosage - 2 a day instead of one. She siad that because her bp is high that this could be causing the swelling. Since taking norvasc her bp has not really come down. Her primary care doctor thinks the norvasc is causing side effects. We are confused.

Alice Young,

Thanks for your question.

Swollen legs and feet (edema) is a common side effect of treatment with Norvasc (amlodipine).  Dizziness and vision changes are also side effects that can occur with this drug.  In some cases the dizziness and blurred vision are due to low blood pressure, so having your Mother's blood pressure checked prior to raising her dose would be a good idea.  High blood pressure does not cause the edema in patients on Norvasc.

I suggest you speak with your primary care doctor for some direction.  It would be best for him/her to speak with the cardiologist and come up with a plan that they both agree on - a plan that would be in your Mother's best interest.

I hope this has been helpful.  Best wishes.
