Q: can smoking cause a clogged artery in the heart?

my dad has a clogged artery and may need a bypass. he's doing an angiogram on tuesday. the question is...does smoking cause an artery to be clogged?  i know it doesn't help but i also know non-smokers who have needed a bypass.

Hi Audrey,

"Clogged" arteries can occur from more things than just smoking. However, smoking can lead to "clogged" arteries without the help of other factors too.

Smoking reduces the diameter of your arteries by 50%.

Imagine having the drain pipe on your kitchen sink being half the size in diameter,

you'd definetly have to call a plumber and you'd be calling him often.
