I have a sudden sharp pain in the center of my chest and 20 minutes later I am still having discomfort in my chest. My BP at this time is 126/77 and a pulse rate of 57. I am a 45 year old female and was diagnosed 4 yrs ago with vasovagal syncope and was prescribed Atenelol but have been off that for a year now. What could this pain be ?

Mrs. R. M.

Thanks for your question.

Chest pain can be a difficult symptom to diagnose, especially in females who can manifest coronary disease in other ways than men.  It also requires a face to face evaluation so that more questions can be asked as part of the history, and a physical examination can be performed along with an electrocardiogram.  Only then can your physician be in a position to determine the cause of your symptoms.

Chest pain, especially when lasting more than 10 - 15 minutes, can be a symptom of a serious condition, and is a complaint that doctors take serious.  You should call your doctor and make an appointment as soon as possible.  Be sure to tell the receptionist that you are experiencing chest pain.  Should you get this discomfort again and it lasts greater than 15 minutes, a visit in the emergency room is indicated.

I hope this has been helpful.  Best wishes.

My wife had similar problem not too long ago and doctors found she had acid reflux.  They put her on medication for this condition and she has been doing fine.  I hope you get to a doctor and be checked, cause chest pains usuallyn indicate a possibility of something bad that needs treatment.
