Mrs. R. M.   Thanks for your question.    Chest pain can be a difficult symptom to diagnose, especially in females who can manifest coronary disease in other ways than men.  It also requires a face to face evaluation so that more questions can be asked as part of the history, and a physical examination can be performed along with an electrocardiogram.  Only then can your physician be in a position to determine the cause of your symptoms.   Chest pain, especially when lasting more than 10 - 15 minutes, can be a symptom of a serious condition, and is a complaint that doctors take serious.  You should call your doctor and make an appointment as soon as possible.  Be sure to tell the receptionist that you are experiencing chest pain.  Should you get this discomfort again and it lasts greater than 15 minutes, a visit in the emergency room is indicated.    I hope this has been helpful.  Best wishes.   Martin Cane, M.D.
