My father had a quadruple bypass surgery about 3 weeks ago. Came through well, but developed pnemomia and MRSA. His sternum started to seperate after that so the cardiothorasic surgeons did another surgery to clean the infected area, and rewire the sternum back together. Now it is seperating again and they are talking about removing the sternum because his bones are so brittle the wire is pulling out of the bone. Is this a common problem after bypass surgery, and what are the risks? What kind of restrictions does someone without a sternum have?
