Q: high wbc

White blood cell count still high after taking antibiotics. WBC 16.

Thanks for your question.  It's difficult to give you an accurate response with the information provided.  Are you feeling ill?  Do you have a fever?  What are your symptoms?  Are you taking any other medications?  How long has this been going on? And there are more questions.

 

Your WBC of 16 is elevated above the normal of 10.5 - 11 (depending on the lab used), but it is not alarmingly elevated.  Occasionally, viral infections can cause an elevation in the white blood cell count. 

 

You need to speak with your physician about your persistent elevation in white count.  Ask him about the differential which is the breakdown of the WBC into the different types of white blood cells.  This sometimes gives a clue to the cause.  If you have symptoms of an infection, he might have to re-evaluate you to see if the infection is still a problem.  Perhaps a change in medication is needed. 

 

If you're feeling well, the high white blood cell count may be due to other causes such as medication. 

 

The bottom line is: you need to consult with your doctor for the meaning and next steps.
