Q: Heart question.

I just woke up with a rapid heart beat and I also get them in the night.  What is it? AM I dehyrdated?  The rapid heart beat eventually goes away. But it has just occurred within the past two days.

Hi Charleen:  Many people have a rapid heart beat and feel it at night.  When we are getting ready for sleep and eveything is quiet its not unusual to feel the heart beat.

Dehydration can be a cause.  So can caffeine, alcohol, stimulants, GERD, and many other things.

If you rate is over 110 beats a minute it is higher than normal.  If a little high most of the time it is normal.  If over 120 then it may be an abnormal rhythm.

Consult your doctor.  They may ask you to wear a 24 hr heart monitor to check this out.
