Saturday, December 12, 2009 Shonisee asks

Q: I have suffered from poor digestion for years. I eat zero wheat & little in the way of any grains.

Age 57

Height 6' 5"

Weight 220

Waist size 38"

Very active

Wheat intolerant, negative for Celiacs Disease

Highly variable stools but usually quite soft, test for pathagens all negative

Often pass a lot of gas, especially if I eat any cerial grains at all

Cholesterol numbers have been stable for years at:

205 overall

139 LDL

38 HDL

Presently taking no drugs to control cholesterol levels

I eat zero wheat and very little in the way of any grains. In general I eat a diet that should give me good cholesterol numbers but mine are borderline to bad. 205 over all, 139 LDL, and 38 HDL. My blood pressures are good and I exercise a lot. My father had similar problems and never got his cholesterol under control even with drugs.

Hi Shonisee,

I recommend discussin a comprehensive lipid panel with your physician, such as the lipoprotein particle panel provided by Spectra Cell Laboratories.  The only way to know if your slightly elevated LDL level is a concern is to know your LDL particle sizes (there are good and bad forms of LDL).  It's possible your level is high, but still okay.  The only way to know is with a comprehensive panel.  Also, here are two posts you may want to review:

Hi Shonisee,

My recommendation for your poor digestion is to add some enzymes to your diet, and take a hydrocholic acid tablet with meals. As for cholestrol, by itself it is not a problem and does not need to be "lowered" by statin drugs. What causes problems is when cholestrol thickens, and that can be solved by adding a common amino acid supplement to your daily routine. Hope this helps.
