Q: I just had a heart stent put in because my artery was 95% blocked!

I was having a heart attack for days until the 3rd hospital figured it out.    I don't have cholesterol or high triglycerides.  I am HIV+ and many years ago the medications I was on gave me abnormally high cholesterol readings from 700 to a high of 1025! It put me in the hospital 3 times with pancreatitus.  I threw those meds away and now my cholesterol is about 130, triglycerides are a little on the high side but not above 200, at one point they were also in the thousands. My blood pressure has always been good around 110.  So my question is, am I permanently messed up because of the old Medication regime? It's a catch 22, take your HIV meds so you don't die but if you take them they make you die.  Very upsetting.  I'm in great shape and I'd be the last person you would expect to have a heart attack.

Hi Azguy1965,

Yes, I agree you are in a "catch 22" situation.  I recommend weighing the pros and cons with your physician, so you can make an informed decision on what's right for you.  Since you had a stent put in, it's very likely you have damage from your past cholesterol levels, etc.  Making sure you are following a heart healthy diet and lifestyle can help reverse some of the damage.  Here are a couple links to good information on diet and lifestyle to promote heart health.
