Monday, June 01, 2009 Mrs. Wms asks

Q: If my husband has pain in his left shoulder should he get a ekg?

My husband has been one high cholestrol and high blood pressure meds for a long time his family history is not good his Father had a heart attach at the age fo 44. I think he needs to have a EKG or other test.... Please tell me if I am being to paranoid.

Hi Mrs. Wms,

 

A EKG is not necessarily the next step, but discuss your options with his physician.  If he has not had an expanded lipid profile I encourage you to discuss getting one with his physician.  With his family history knowing his lipoprotein(a) and other more comprehensive lab values will give you a better understanding of his heart health situation and appropriate treatment steps.
