Re: Beta-blockers, Statins, BP Med's, etc.
The reason I ask the question "Do any Heart Med's cause or contribute to memory loss?" is that I and a friend, both with heart problems, have experienced memory loss that seemed to come on suddenly, was dismissed by our Dr's because of our age, as being normal, but seemed to us as abnormally sudden.
We have both found reports that Beta-blockers could be responsible, and in fact, are somewhat known to contribute to memory loss, as well as reports indicating Statins as the responsible party.
I was (am still) hoping for some personal experiences from other patients such as the two above.
I survived a stroke probably because I got to the ER in the 3-hour window of time. I can remember each detail vividly, so must not have had many lasting effects. Also no P.T./O.T. Maybe just minimal balance problems.
On the contrary. I feel much more alert now that I take the beta-blockers. I was always so tired before I started on my heart meds + thyroid med. I take beta-blockers, chol med, coumadin, an anti-arrhythmic, and Levoxyl for thyroid. I take most of them at night so they help me sleep. ~~Alison
Last year I was taking Zocor. I suffered an episode of transient global amnesia. The neurologist I saw suggested I look at the internet under statins and memory loss and I was shocked. I've lost eight hours of my life and was thankful the episode happened while I was at home and not while I was driving. When I saw my regular doctor, I told her that I was going to go off the statins because of the episode and she told me she had never heard of any problems of this kind. I no longer take any statins and have to fight my doctor each time I go for my check up. I believe that the use of the statins contributed to my memory loss and I will not use them for any reason. I try to watch my diet and exercise every day instead of the statins.
