Q: Renexa

My Dr. is considering starting me on Renexa. I am currently taking 60mg if Isosorbide for angina and can't tell that it has helped. What is Renexa and what is it supposed to do?

Jo Cunningham,

Thanks for your question.

Renexa (generic - renolazine) is a medication used for the treatment of chronic angina which is chest pain caused by blockages in the coronary arteries.  It is used in people who have not obtained relief from other medication and is intended to be used in combination with other medications that the patient is already taking for angina.

Renexa improves the blood flow to the heart muscle and also makes the heart work more efficiently.  The precise action of renexa, however, is not known.

Dosages for renexa range from 500 mg daily to 1000 mg twice a day.

I hope this has been helpful.

I can only tell you one thing, it is a life altering event when you start taking Renexa. I had very mild discomfort with exercise or working in the yard.  I have a lake out back that has a 2.4 mile path.  I'd do it in 55 to 65 minutes on average.  I am not kidding, I started taking Renexa one day at 8:00PM for my first dose 500 mg every 12 hours.  I took the second one at 8:00 AM the next morning and started my walk.  I went around the lake in 35 minutes and didn't break a sweat.  My wife thought I haden't gone on my walk.  I've been on Renexa for 10 days now.  I sleep like a baby, I wake up completely refreshed, all of my little aches and pains that I never associated with my heart condition are gone 100%.  For the first time I can fill my lungs completely not taking half breaths.  It is truly a miracle drug as far as I'm concerned.  I called my Cardiologist and asked if I could contact the representative of Renexa to give them a testimonial.  I walk up hills and never slow down.  I'm 66 and have been diagnosed with a Heart condition since 1995.  I have energy to spare, I don't get tired in the afternoon, my wife has to tell me to come to bed I'm so full of energy.  My mind is completely clear.  It's literally hard to find the words about how much this medication has changed my life.  I hope I've helped you make the decision to take it.  God bless.

I was so happy to see your comment on this drug. My daughter started on it today. She is not active like you because she has cerebral palsy. This is our last ditch effort before a heart cath and due to her health problems they can't do the heart cath through the groin and will have to do an arm cath which I didn't even know was possible until my cardiologist told me about it.  Thanks again for your positive input.Smile

I suffer from cronic angina and have been taking, emdur along with numerous nitro pills per day.  My Dr. subscribed renexa and since I have been taking the drug I have had no angina pain.  I am suffering from severe shortness of breath and have been scheduled for ECP in two weeks.  The Renexa really helped me, and so far I have had no ill effects
