What can I do next when blood pressure med is not helping my high diastolic condition?
Have experienced bad change in blood pressure since a full hysterectomy a year ago and it seemed linked to Vit D deficiency. For past few months it is at 95-100 (with systolic varying from 120-155). Pelvic pain never went away after surgery and as it extended into my legs, hips, and butt, a test for Vitamin D showed severe deficiency. Taking Vit D has reduced the pains to almost none. Blood pressure meds initially caused my legs to become warm, implying blood flow to the legs. It helped lower my blood pressure for a few days, but it's not helped with lowering blood pressure since then (3-4 weeks) taking Lisinopril 10mg 2x day and there is no change in my diastolic number, with one exception; took Diflucan for yeast infection after 10-day Amoxicillian treatment for middle ear infection. The Diflucan brought my blood pressure to normal for a few hours, 120/80. Am normal weight, female, age 57. I've had peripheral artery disease testing and pelvic/abdominal CT scan without anything wrong. Everything gets a bit worse for hours if I've been on my feet for a while. Cardiologists I've seen want me to see my Internist to manage my bp, but it doesn't seem managable! What do I do next?
Hi Karen Ann,
Your MD and cardiologists are most familiar with your specific situation, so they are the best source for guidance to treat your high blood pressure. Continue to work with them. It can take some trial and error before the best treatment option is figured out.
That being said, I recommend two "natural" steps you can take to improve your blood pressure control.
1. Incorporate more omega 3 fatty acids into your daily diet. Omega 3's reduce arterial inflammation and lower blood pressure. You can learn more here - Top 5 Omega 3 Sources to Lower Cholesterol.
2. Consider increasing your celery intake. Kind of a "food as medication" approach. Your risk of side effects is minimal and you have the potential to lower your diastolic blood pressure 2.5 mm Hg. Learn more here - Lower High Blood Pressure: Use Celery for More than just Weight Loss.
Of course, the above two suggestions are based on you already having a solid foundation to promote a lower blood pressure (physically active, limited salt intake, ideal body weight, etc.).
Always discuss all supplements with your MD.
All the best,
Lisa Nelson, RD, LN
