Tuesday, April 14, 2009 Question in Dallas asks

Q: Anything to be worried about with discomfort in lower left chest area?

Two days ago I began to experience some mild discomfort just below and behind my rib cage on the left side, in an area that I would call the lower part of my heart.  It would last for about 5 seconds at a time and then fade away.  this has continued for the last two days, and seems to be more acute in the evening and while lying in bed. In the last 24 hours I have experienced symptoms of indigestion, such as a feeling of pressure in my esophogus and actually belch from time to time.  however, this did not follow any strange or heavy, spicy meal and continues today.  I am a 58 year old male, not overweight, non smoker.  I happened to be at a dematologist yesterday and my blood pressure was 131 over 81.  I had my last physical in Dec and the EKG was normal.  I have high cholesterol but it is controlled by Zocor and I have been on it for seven years.  Currently I take a 20 mg tablet each day, and it was around 200 at my last physical.  I normally take a 81mg aspirin daily, but haven't taken it for several months due to some minor outpatient surgery that I was having (removing some moles). Lastly, I have no history of heart disease in my family.  Should I have any concern at this point since I have no radiating pain, no shortness of breath, etc?
