Q: high genetic cholesterol for person in great shape, eats well and exercises daily.

I was just diagnosed w/ high genetic cholesterol.  I eat well, exercise w/ cardio and weight train 5-6x's a week, have low body fat and take good care of myself.  I don't drink, smoke or eat fried foods.  I was put on Simcor.  Can I lower my (bad) cholesterol and raise my (good) cholesterol by doing anything else besides take the pill?  Will I be able to go off the pill at a later date or is it forever?  Are there side effects or long term effects by taking this pill or any cholesterol reducing pills?  Can any damage thus far created be reversed??

I do not know about Simcor, but it is pretty hard to get genetic cholesterol in control without drugs. In know this because my father is right now in the same position. He eats well, exercises everyday and is the most fit person that I know of- yet at 54 yr he has been alloted for a by-pass within a few days. He has been on drugs (Lovastatin I believe and others) for a long time (10 - 15 yrs) yet ......

The only way is to be careful and get regular physical tests. The drugs will certainly delay the process but not entirely stop it. I was reading about some drugs that are awaiting trials that may be helpful in such cases- but I guess its a long wait till its actually available. Also lower any stress you may have- I guess it ultimately helps. Good luck!

Oh my god!! I sounded so negative! I m sorry babs.

There are so many things that are out of our hands and this is one of them. So do take your medication and do continue to keep screening to see how the meds work for you.

With your lifestyle I am sure everything will work out.
