Hello DEBRA MICHELZ,

Congestive heart failure is a disease that requires many medications to help manage the disease's progression, so I am not surprised that your loved one is on so many pills.  It is not uncommon at all to be on simultaneously all the medications you have listed.

Your loved one is absolutely on the right drugs for CHF.  He's on an ACE inhibitor (the Altace), a beta blocker (Zebata) which help control blood pressure.  He's on bumex and spironolactone which are both diuretics (or water pills) to help keep fluid from building up in his lungs and ankles.

There are three drugs that he's on that could potentially be causing some of his symptoms.  The water pills alter the electrolytes in the blood; when these are not at the right levels, they can cause muscle cramps, fatigue, and other symptoms.  Digoxin and coumadin are also both drugs that require regular blood tests to monitor their levels.

An appointment with his doctor to discuss his symptoms is absolutely necessary in this situation to figure out what is wrong with your loved one.  As always, do not discontinue any medications without telling your doctor first!

To your health,

Neil MD
