Q: Is it normal to have a massively and rapidly increase heart rate during modest exercise?

Hi,

I should be most grateful if you could help with the following.

Whenever I start exercising, my heart rate increases massively from about 100 just undertaking everday activities to over 180 when running on my treadmill for about 3 minutes at 8 km per hour.

My age is 42 and I weigh 87 kgs (13 and a 1/2 stone), with a height of 1.71 m (5ft 7ins)

I undertake moderate exercise twice per week (4 hours in total of Tae Kwon Do)

With kind regards, Harry

Hi Harry,

No, it is not normal for your heart rate to increase so rapidly and to such a high level with moderate activity.  I recommend consulting your physician for an evaluation.

All the best,
