Monday, May 16, 2011 Zenthal asks

Q: I just had blood work done as an annual physical. my BUN is low. What does it mean and should I do anything about it? I drink plenty of water, and I am male, so not pregnant. any advice?

Total blood work showed my mLDL at 155, CHOL 219 (about 30 points lower than 1 year ago) Vit D at 20 - starting to take vitamins with my Glucosime and Chondritian that have Vit D too. MCH and MCHC at 0.2 high and 0.4 high (unknown what they are). Seen write up on mLDL about linked to Vit D, taking vit d supplements now Thinking about stopping for some raw nuts - price dependent. Already have been taking 2 to 3 fruits to work each day for lunches and snacks. Want to bring weight down (245 @ 6'2" with a large frame, wide shoulders and barrel chest) to between 200 and 220. With working 1.5 to 2 hours from home and working 10 hour days I have no time for exercise before or after so I started walking around the facilities at work up and down hills and stairs where they are located for my afternoon break. I am active at home with the yard work, or with cutting/splitting/stacking firewood for winter. I am concerned about this BUN being at a 6, and the MCH and MCHC. I understand the mLDL monster and have several things I am about to try from your website, so thanks for the start. Any other suggestions that could help for my unique situation?

Hi Zenthal,

Congratulations on the drop in your cholesterol level - great job! A low BUN (blood urea nitrogen) can be caused by a variety of factors, such as liver failure, low protein diet, malnutrition, and over-hydration. In your situation I recommend discussing with your physician to determine the cause and if you should be concerned/take actions to lower levels.

All the best,
