Q: My mom continues to fill with fluid, other than medicine what can we do

She has high blood pressure, heart diease, diabetic, she's 84. She has just started filling with fluid, two trips to the hospital in Dec.. I know that the Lasix is hurting her kidneys and I wondered if there is anything we can do through diet to help her eliminate this extra fluid.

Hello Karen,

Though lasix and other diuretics are likely needed, diet and exercise can also play a part in managing congestive heart failure (the disease it sounds like you are describing).

Generally speaking, patient's with heart failure should take no more than 1.5 liters of fluid per day.  They should monitor their weight daily, and should call their physician if they gain more than 1.5 pounds in a 24 hr period.   Weight loss of excess fat, too, can help.  Staying active, with your mom's personal physician's approval of amount of exercise, can also help in improving the quality of her life.

Discuss your concerns with your mother's physician at her next visit.

To your and your mother's health,

Neil MD
