Q: What is atheromatous aorta?

my dad (age 55) had a chest x-ray last week because he thought that he had a lung problem. He coughed out phlegm with streaks of blood. It turned out in his chest x-ray result that his lungs were clear but he had an atheromatous aorta. I made some research about "atheromatous aorta".It means that aorta, which is the largest artery in the body, has thickened and contains deposits of cholesterol on its linings.  How is this connected to the condition of my dad where in he coughed out phlegm with streaks of blood?  Dont Know what to do. Please Help us. Ill be grateful for your immediate response.Thanks.

Hi Milet,

It's possible the condition also resulted in inflammation of internal tissues which may have lead to bleeding and the bloody phlegm. However, I recommend discussing with his physician to fully understand the situation.

All the best,
