Thursday, February 12, 2009 JOHNSON asks

Q: difficult to raise right arm above hip level, pain in shoulder while raising, no other discomforts.

JOHNSON,

 

Thanks for your question.

 

This is not your heart.  This is a problem in your shoulder such as arthritis, a tendon problem, or rotator cuff problem.  You should see your primary care physician or an orthopedic doctor for an X-ray of your shoulder.  In many cases, anti-inflammatory medication and therapy will take care of the problem.  In some cases, an injection of steroids will alleviate the problem along with medication.  In severe cases, when conservative measures fail, surgery may be suggested.
