Saturday, December 11, 2010 Michael Stair asks

Q: About once every week, I do an exercise program that keeps my heart rate at around 160 beats per minute for four minutes. But sometimes my heart rate can remain uncomfortably fast up to 9 hours later.

(I'm a 21 year old male, so 160 BPM is around 80% of my maximum.) My heart rate seems to recover normally at first, dropping off in just a few minutes after I finish the workout. However, as I say, my body temperature will stay high and my heart rate will stay around 10-20 beats per minute faster than normal (about the level of walking up stairs, say) for the rest of the day, and can keep me from sleeping at night for hours. My questions: Could this be a result of dehydration? I try to drink around two to three glasses of water after the workout -- is this not enough? Second: Are there any methods I could use to slow my heart rate while I'm trying to sleep (aside from breathing slower, which doesn't seem to work)? Thank you.
