Q: Chest and jaw pain after triple bypass surgery.

My aunt had a triple bypass a month ago and is experienceing chest pains (sharp like a knife), jaw pain, dizziness, low blood pressure, lightheadedness and nausea.  To date she cannot walk across the roomn without being winded and in danger of losing her balance.  They have run tests, but can't seem to come up with a reason for her symptoms.  We are very worried as these were her original symptoms before the surgery.  We are not sure what to do as most doctors are dismissing this as "normal"...Is this normal?  Are there any tests that we can ask to be run to help figure out what is causing her symptoms and get her much needed relief?  Any help you can provide would be deeply appreciated.  I love my aunt and am afraid that I am going to lose her if we don't find the cause of her symptoms.  Thank you so much for any advice or help you can offer.

Hi Lima,

I'm sorry to hear about your aunt's issues.  It can take 4-6+ weeks to feel better after bypass surgery.  Her symptoms/complaints are concerning, yet some patients do have similar complaints a few weeks after surgery.  I would ask questions about the medication she is on since she is experiencing blood pressure issues and I would ask the physician about common anxiety symptoms after such a major surgery.  Getting another opinion if her current physician is unable to provide more information or relief might be the best course to take.

Thank you for responding Karen.  They have changed her medication and her blood pressure has increased to 86/60 (still low but better than what it was).  She is still experiencing the pain in her chest and they believe it may be caused by an inflamed heart.  To be honest, I am not sure what that means but they are performing new tests today.  Thank you again for your response.

Warm wishes,

Lima
