Monday, November 23, 2009 Karen & James asks

Q: Does anyone know the answer to my vision cocern?

My husband and I just had our third child on July 21,2009 and while we were pregnant I had Gestational Diabetes. While I was pregnant i had an episode to where i saw bright lights in my eyes like i had been starring into the sun for a period of time but didn't, then i couldn't see. After that, at times, i would develope a small headache. Then here recently this has happened to me again not once but three times in one day, which was on Saturday. So when I woke up on Sun. I checked my blood sugar and it was 153 that morning. I hadn't ate that morning the last time i had eaten was at 7:30 Sat. night. To mewith my body frame that was high. I stand 5'4 3/4" and wiegh 130. I am just wondering if that could be a problem to diabetes or a heart conditon. I have had problems with my heart in the past when I was 30, I just turned 41 in Oct. please if anyone has an answer please email me back. I am gong to the doctor, but in the meantime I have been talking to the best Doctor in town and that is the almighty one, his name is Dr. Jesus. Thank you in the meantime for your answers and concerns, prayers and thoughts.

Hi Karen,

I recommend you contact your physician as soon as possible.  From what you've shared, it sounds like your blood sugar is not under control.  This can have a long term impact on your vision along with other negative health consequences.  Instead of a standard finger prick to check your blood sugar, I recommend discussing a hemoglobin A1C with your physician.  This will tell you more about what's been going on with your blood sugar over the past few months.  If your blood sugar is an issue request a referral to a dietitian so you can get your diet/lifestyle on track to promote blood sugar control.

All the best,

Lisa Nelson RD
