Wednesday, July 13, 2011 Sad Mother asks

Q: My son (schizophrenic)56 yrs old (diagnosed at age 35)takes a med: risperidone 3mg-1x/day and also takes vytorin 10mg for cholesterol.

He's been taking risperidone 2mg for years w/o ANY side effects, except fatigue and headaches. His dr increased the dosage to 3mg about 3+ yrs ago, and also put him on vytorin approx. 2yrs ago. He developed some bad side effects (muscle pain/joints/both elbows)over a month ago so STOPPED the vytorin, but now left side of his face has become numb. Took him to ER last night, had a brain CT and it was normal as well as lab results. They said it was just side effects of risperidone rather than the vytorin and he would just have to live with it! I'm wondering if he could SAFELY take a herbal supplement such as ground Salba to lower the cholesterol rather than take the vytorin??

Hi Sad Mother,

I recommend you get a second opinion and even a third if necessary until you find a physician willing to investigate further and explore other treatment options with reasonable side effects.

All the best,
