Q: what food should not be eaten when you have hyperthyroidism?

my husband has a hyperthyroidism & he is taking neo mercazole (antithyroid agent) and inderal (for palpitations). What should my husband's dietary plan in order to maintain the level of his thyroid hormone. We learned that his medications is just temporary and maintenance since it would really not eliminate the disease. He had this diagnosis last February 2009 when his level of potassium dropped really bad. Please we need help. Your advise is surely appreciated. Thank you. April - Philippines

Hi April_moratin,

There really is no diet recommended for hyperthyroidism or to maintain thyroid hormone levels.  Hyperthyroid is treated with medication, radioactive iodine treatments or surgery.

Hypothyroid treatment

For his low potassium (if this continues to be an issue), he can eat bananas, raisins and most other dried fruit, tomatoes, potatoes, orange juice and oranges, papaya, cantaloupe, honeydew, avocados, mangos, kiwi, sweet potatoes, winter squash, dried beans and peas.  Most fruits and vegetables have at least a little potassium in them.  The list above has some examples of higher potassium foods.

Best of luck,

Monica M. Skidmore, MS, RD
