Q: rapid heart rate while at rest with chest discomfort

I am 39 and have diabities and high bp. I take 2 bp meds and metformin for my diabities.

I have been sitting still for a long while and my chest feels like my heart is pounding off and on witch comes with some chest discomfort.  my bp is 137/83 and pulse is 100. I have had a stroke in the past at the age of 30 due to bp high and being in the heat to long. I hope you can give me an insite to whats going on.  thank you

Thanks for your question.

 

Though I can't tell you with any certainty exactly what is going on, I am concerned with your symptoms of chest pain and high pulse rate and the sensation of palpitations.  These symptoms are even more of a concern given your history of diabetes, hypertension, and prior stroke.

 

If this chest discomfort is new, you need to go to the emergency room for an evaluation.  Chest pain can be difficult to diagnose, especially in diabetics.  However, with your history, you should not take any chances and the safest thing for you to do is get evaluated.  Should this be due to your heart, the sooner you are seen the better.
