Q: How much can mild hypothyroidism affect cholesterol and triglycerides?

I am a 47 year old female on oral contraceptives and synthroid 100mcg. Recent blood work shows elevated TSH of 5.84 (cut off is 4.0) and elevated T4 (14.0, cut off is 12.5). My first question is how can BOTH TSH and T4 be elevated?  Is this even possible?  Second, what affect would this TSH/T4 elevation have on my lipids?  While my lipids are in normal range (total 174, HDL 60, LDL 89, Trig 147) I have been working very hard with diet, exercise and supplements to reduce my lipids, based on Dr. William Davis' column, and expected to see significant improvement. Will I be able to make further improvements in lipids if I am able to get my TSH/T4 in normal ranges?

Thanks for any insights.

Hi Sophiequus,

Yes, the thyroid gland does impact cholesterol levels.  It is likely once you have your hypothyroidism better regulated that your cholesterol levels will improve, although they are not bad now.
