Kenyan girlfriend (48) has hypertension 185/110 continualheadaches, now nosebleeds. Serious?

My friend has had high blood pressure for about 18 months.  Medicines do not seem to help much.  She has been a workaholic, but the HBP has slowed her down to snail's pace. Her headaches are very painful, she is regularly giddy, has neck pain and stiffness, and now she has developed nosebleeds.  Is this a precursor to a stroke coming on, and what can she do to lower this very high reading (185/110)?  I am very frightened for her!

Chris,

Thanks for your question.

Your girlfriend's BP is very high, and more importantly is has been high for some time.  Her symptoms of headache and now nosebleeds could certainly be from the blood pressure.  Has she been taking her medication regularly?

She must see her physician as soon as possible and get her pressure down.  The longer she goes with blood pressure this high, the higher the risk for developing other problems, including stroke.  If her doctor is not aggressive, she should find another physician.
