Q: Should healthy people consult a cardiologist before running a half marathon?

I'm a healthy 39 year old male who has been running regularly for 14 years and off and on before that.  My blood pressure, pulse rate, lipid panel and glucose are all within normal levels.  I've never had chest pains.  I'm 5'10"and 185 pounds. I saw that three people died in the Detroit half marathon recently.  I'm planning on running a half marathon (my third) in February when I'll be 40.  I also completed a full marathon in 2005.  Should I consult with a cardiologist before the race?

Hi Davem999,

Consider discussing with your primary care physician.  If they feel you are at risk they can refer you to a cardiologist.

Well done staying active and good luck with any upcoming half marathons!  I had the pleasure of doing a half marathon back in 2006:)

All the best,
