Plaque can be removed, though different techniques are used for different areas of the body. Atherectomy is a way to remove plaque in the coronary arteries (arteries of the heart) with a laser catheter or rotating shaver via a catheter inserted in your groin. Endarterectomy is the surgical removal of plaque from an artery. You can read more about this procedure on the following website: http://www.vascularweb.org/patients/NorthPoint/Endarterectomy.html
