Angie,

You should certainly see your pediatrician regarding your child. The usual cause of an elevated white blood cell count (WBC) and swollen lymph nodes is an infection. Since this has been going on for a year, infection is less likely on the list of possibilities. There are more rare disorders of the blood cells, which could possibly cause these signs/symptoms. There are also unique auto-immune syndromes where the body's immune system begins to treat the body as a forgein object and therefore attacks it. One such disorder is called Kawasaki syndrome, which is a possibility in a 5 year old with prolonged fever and swollen lymph nodes. This is a serious syndrome that requires medical attention. By no means is it likely that your child has this syndrome (it is rare). However, it is very important to see your pediatrician to develop a plan to address this issue.
