Hi Andy:  The blue color of the lips can indicate what is called cyanosis.  This is when non-oxygen rich blood goes into the arterial circulation.  Normally your arteries carry blood that contains oxygen (red color).  Venous blood has much less oxygen and is generally a blue color.  So when the lips turn blue, your doctor is looking to see if you have a hole in your heart linking the venous side with the arterial side.  This can be from what is called an ASD, PFO, or an abnormal venous connection (less likely)

If this is happening (and it may not be true that your blue lips are due to this)  but if it is then it could be enlarging the right side of the heart and creating a fast heart beat.

check with your doctor regarding this.
