can heart attack pain last for more then a day

Christine
10/10/08

I had a heart attack on 9/11/2008. (female 45 years old) After the heart attack, I came home and then went back into the hospital with a retroperitoneal bleed. I bled on the inside from the heart cath that they did when they put my medicated stent in. I bled for 4 days before being admitted into the iccu. After blood transfusions and many other things I was sent home 5 days later. Now I have had chest pain that I am not sure is muscular or not. It has been going on for about 30 hours. Sometimes I press on a certain part of my breast bone and it feels better. The last thing I want to do is go to the ER and it being a muscular thing. Can heart pain last this long. I am not sure what to do.

Christine,

Thanks for your question.  I'm sorry to hear that you've had so many problems.

It is difficult to tell with any certainty what might be the cause of your chest discomfort.  This is definitely a situation that you should discuss with your doctor.  Any patient with your recent problems who is having any discomfort, should inform their doctor.  You will need to be seen and have an electrocardiogram done to be sure this is not your heart.  There are other possible causes that need to be checked also.  Yes, this could be muscular, but that conclusion can only be made with a physical exam, EKG, and after other causes have been ruled out.  Your doctor will take this symptom serious, especially with your recent heart attack followed by complications.

Call him today.
