Q: My mother is 75 years old, diabetic, morbidly obese & in the end stages of renal failure.

She had stints put in about 10 years ago. Due to congestive heart failure, she regularly has to have excess fluid removed during dialysis, which she has 3 times per week.  She was informed about 3 months ago that she likely won't live the year.  She has learned to recognize the signs of her congestive heart failure, and yesterday when she was experiencing shortness of breath, she also had jaw & chest pain.  She also has a DNR  order.  A doctor has suggested another cath and possible stints.  She wants my opinion.  Is this smart?  Will her other factors affect her chances of complications during the cath?  Is there any other way to check to see if there are other heart problems, other than catheterization?

Hi Kerryleigh,

Your mothers health situation is complicated and there is no easy (or right) answer. There are always risks with any medical procedure, including catheterization. I recommend you discuss the pros and cons with her doctor as well as other options so you can help your mother make the right decision for her situation.

Thank you Lisa,

My mother went through with it.  And it was successful.  They did find that she has some blockages that cannot be helpped with stints and would require by-pass surgery.  Thankfully the doctors were honest with her and told her she is not a candidate.  They inserted stints where she would get the most benefit while they were in there.  She is now feeling alot better.

Thanks for your advice.  Sometimes even when talking to our own doctors we tend to look at things too emotionally.  I appreciate you.

Hi Kerryleigh,

Great to hear the procedure went well and your mother is feeling better. I'm sure that's a relief for both of you.
