Q: Cardiac Cath and kidney problems

Hello, I'm not sure this is the right place to look, but incase it is:

My father is 80 years old and has been through a splenectomy 3 years ago due to kidney cancer.

Also, he is recently been suffering from heart problems- the last test he had reported that he has a heart function of only 20%.

Since he only has one kidney, the doctor estimated that going through cardiac catheterization will have 80% chance of leading to dialysis.

Is there any way you know of that a cardiac catheterization can be performed without, or with minimum, kidney damage (caused by the contrast dye).

I really am desperate, and will appreciate any kind of help including advice or referrals to specialists.

Thanks, Orr.

Hi Orr,

I thought maybe Health Central had a renal Q&A, but I just checked an no such luck. I'm not able to answer question and encourage you to question your fathers physician further.

All the best,
