Q: High resting heart rate

36 yrs. old female w/resting heart rate of 110. 5 mins. on the eliptical machine and it's 130-135 and about 30 min. it's 170-175 and I have dizzyness and a light headache with it. Had an echocardiograham about 1 1/2 yrs. ago and everything was fine. I always feel like Im out of breath and I breath a little heavier that normal. Father has heart disease and mother's sibblings have heart disease. Never smoked. My test was fine. What do I do now? Should I be concerned? Could this just be a norm for me. This has been going on for about 2 years.

Hi Angie,

At the age of 36, your max heart rate is 184.  When you exercise, you typically want to workout between 70-85% your max heart rate.  At 170-175 beats per minute you are at 92-95% max heart rate.  I recommend you continue to monitor your heart rate when working out to stay within 70-85% heart rate max (129-156 beats per minute).  When your heart rate goes above this level, decrease the intensity of your workout until your heart rate returns to the desired level.  Also, contact your physician regarding your shortness of breath to determine if an evaluation is warranted.

All the best,

Lisa Nelson RD
