Should I be concerned about a heavy feeling in the middle of my chest and upper right shoulder pain? I've been feeling extreme pressure and dizziness too, and sometimes tingling and shortness of breath. Both of my parents suffered from heart disease. Anyone know what it is?

    Kath,

    Thanks for your question.

Your symptoms are very concerning that the cause may be heart disease, especially with your family history.  This needs to be evaluation further with a stress test and other possible studies.

If your doctor is not taking you seriously, it might be time to consider another opinion with either another primary care physician or a cardiologist.

Should be experiencing this discomfort for longer than 10 minutes, you should go to the emergency room for an evaluation as pain that lasts longer than 10 to 15 minutes may represent a heart attack.

If your heart evaluation proves that your heart is OK, then other less dangerous sources for this discomfort can be looked for.  These include gallbladder disease, Hiatal hernia, reflux disease, esophageal spams, achalasia where the esophagus prevents food from entering the stomach and collect in the esophagus, peptic ulcer disease, and esophagitis.  Of course muscle or ligamentous problems of the chest wall itself can sometimes present in this way.

So make an appointment as soon as possible to see a doctor who will listen to you and take an interest in your symptoms.  And, as mentioned above, any pain that is prolonged greater than 10 minutes deserves a trip to the emergency room.

    Best wishes and feel better.
