Monday, January 24, 2011 pmjm0315 asks

Q: I am 46, mom of 8, 140lbs, and have high BP. 13 years ago I had a first degree block on EKG. No tests since. At night now in bed I feel a thud every once in a while. Could it be second degree block?

I take Metoprolol 50 mg. Per day. I'm a smoker. Paxil 40 mg per day, depression. Why hasn't my PCP had these tests repeated? Shouldn't I have regular heart testing since I was found to have a first degree block? Should I request an EKG? Echo? Thanks.

Hi Pmjm0315,

Yes, I recommend you discussing follow-up testing with your physician as well as an ongoing plan for monitoring your condition. Definitely contact your physician now to discuss your symptoms and determine the cause.
