The main difference between the two is a hell of a lot of pain. A doctor will normally do a Angiogram to figure out what to do. An Angiogram is where they stick something in a large blood vesel and push it up near the heart, it then releases a dye which they can watch on a TV through an X-Ray, the dye flowing in the vessels will show any blockages and how bad they are. If they see only a few blockages they can normally fix it right there and then with the Angioplasty or stints. This doesn't really hurt, and you will be back at work in no time. If it bad, or many different blockages, the doctor will say that heart surgery or a bypass is the only option. Open Heart surgery has come a long way, and most all are done with no problems. But its very scary, very painful, and emotionally life changing. It will take 3 to 6 months to feel normal and go back to work, and 6 to 12 month for the bone in your chest that they cut, to completely heal. Even tho a bypass is harder, some say its better, as angioplasty and Vascular Stenting are known to fail more.
No-one truely knowns the joy of life, till they had an open-heart surgery.
I'm not a doctor. I only had a heart attack, an angiogram, and then open-heart surgery a quadruple bypass.
So, I'm not to knowledgeable of the angioplasty and stents, but from what I hear they are quick, easy, and pretty much painless.
If you have any of these or even open heart surgery, you just don't have it done and go on the same way with your life. You need to take a few drugs the rest of your life, and you need to make some big changes in your life.
I quit smoking, I need to watch what I eat, and exercise.
Doing these things and taking the drugs "should" prevent any further blockages.
Yes a person can have more then one open heart surgeries. I've seen stories of people on the internet that have had several. I can't imagine having to go through a second heart surgery, maybe thats why have have no problems in quitting smoking cold turkey after 25 years.
Since my surgery, my heart and lungs feel better then they have all of my life.
It's only been a couple of months, but I believe in time I'm going to be better then before.
