Tuesday, June 07, 2011 Jenny Choi asks

Q: Hi, my Mother in law had a by pass surgery about 6 weeks ago, she's a diabetic. She had all the normal side effects plus one extra, throwing up, she's been throwing up food and medicines taken.

Recent blood test shows that her Thyroxine is 51.0 pmol/L where normal is 9.0-25.0. Her sugar level also unstable, it can increased to 15 one day and dipped to 3 the next day.

Hi Jenny,

I'm not going to give you a complete answer on this because I am not a physician/nurse or health professional, but I am a survivor of open heart / bypass surgery so I'd like to comment. I'm sorry your mother in law is suffering discomfort. Of course you are in regular touch with her physician regarding this? Does she have some home nursing help as well? The unstable blood sugar may indeed have something to do with her inability to digest food and medicine. There are treatments and meds to get her stomach calmed down and that would certainly be the first area of concern. She can become dangerously low in potassium and other important nutrients if she continues to vomit, so this needs your immediate attention. Diabetes always complicates medical procedures as well. Clear liquids and if she can tolerate it dry toast or crackers should be easier for her to digest, also rice.  I do hope you have reported this to your physician who will most likely want to see her asap. Recovery from heart surgery can take a long time and is not always a straight path. My very best to you.
