Q: What could cause a 25-year-old girl to have a rapid heart rate?

I am 25 years old, and over the past few years I've noticed that my heart rate is really fast. My normal resting heart rate is averaging 100 bpm. At my last physical, my heart rate was about 110 bpm. My blood pressure is pretty normal, 122/80, and I'm not overweight. I will be seeking an EKG and an echocardiogram once my school insurance kicks in a few weeks from now. I was just wondering what could cause such a high heart rate in someone my age. Could it be a thyroid problem? My sister has a thyroid problem, and the doctor suggested that I might as well.

Hi Meshuggeneh,

Yes, the thyroid can impact your heart rate and heart palpitations.  I recommend working with your physician and completing the necessary tests to determine the cause.

All the best,
