sandy,

Thanks for your question.

Diagnosing chest pain can be a challenge, especially in diabetics and females.  Infections in the chest, especially when accompanied by cough can cause chest discomfort.  Much of the discomfort is caused by straining of the muscles between the ribs caused by excess coughing.  Some infections can directly affect the lining of the lung or chest cavity, causing significant discomfort.

Could this be your heart?  It could be.  You need to discuss your concerns with your physician, who knows you best, medically, and has recently examined you.  He might feel comfortable that all of your symptoms are due to your recent infections.  However, if there is a possibility that your discomfort is due to an underlying heart problem, he might suggest further testing which could include a stress test.

Be sure to express your concerns clearly and openly discuss the need for further testing.

Doctors take chest pain very seriously, and I'm sure he/she will be happy to discuss this with you and share the rationale of their decision.

Best wishes and fell better.
