After finding out I had high cholesterol, I decided to change my diet and went on the Mediterranean Diet. I began going to the gym and began exercising daily. Since then I have noticed that my cholesterol has gone down (including weight) and am in better shape. however, one thing that ended up happening was that my triglycerides went up. Do you know why this is so?
Hi Jorgecompaq,
Congratulations on making positive changes! One possible reason your triglycerides have increased is an improper balance of carbs, protein, and fat for your meals and snacks. For example, if you do not balance carbohydrates with adequate protein at every meal/snack it can impact blood sugar/triglyceride levels. Many times people that make diet changes to improve cholesterol/lose weight drastically cut fat intake. Yes, you want to limit unhealthy fats, but cutting heart healthy fats too low can have a negative impact also.
Here's a post that discusses steps to lower triglycerides. You may want to review and see if there is some other change you've made that might have caused an increase.
