I have been having pain in the center of my chest the last couple of nights and only at night. It started when I coughed and had a sharp pain in this area. I feel fine except for this pain at night. What could it be?
Compare what you are experiencing to the following article on heart attack symptoms. It may be worth contacting your physician. Other options might be something like costochondritis, an inflammation of the tissue around your sternum that's only irritated when you lie down. You could also have coughed hard enough to "move" a rib slightly out of place, which can cause pain, as well. As I say, only a doctor who performs an exam with know for certain.
