Wednesday, July 14, 2010 Tristan asks

Q: I am experiencing heart palpitations, numbness and shortness of breath while sleeping.

I am a 32 year old male and for the past 5 years or so, I have been experiencing what i would explain as what feels like a minor heart attack about once a week.

While i`m sleeping it starts as what i can describe as waves or rushes of blood from my head to my chest followed by severe rapid heart beats to the point that it feels like my heart is going to beat out of my chest. I am unable to wake during these attacks followed by shortness of breath.  I am completely aware that this is happening but an unable to move or speak and have to fight to come out of it.

I have seen many doctors and have had a full range of blood work, ECG`s and had a holter monitor and nothing has come back as a concern.

Has anyone experienced this or have any ideas or suggestions for what it may be or what I can do about it.

Thanks.

Hi Tristan,

Dr. Shelby-Lane answered a question about heart palpitations awhile back. You may want to review her answer to see how it applies to your situation:

What triggers heart palpitations?

You sound like you have sleep apnea, talk to your doctor about getting tested.  It is very simple and your insurance will usually cover both testing and treatment.  You didn't mention having a sleep study ordered by your doctor.  You have some classic nighttime symptoms.  If you snore to any degree (you will have to ask someone that has seen you sleeping regularly because you usually won't know if you snore or not yourself) you should speak  to your doctor right away about having a sleep study.
