Chinese red yeast rice may prevent heart attacks

Researchers say heart attack patients may be able to reduce their risk of having another attack by taking a purified extract of Chinese red yeast rice. In a study of almost 5,000 people, scientists found that heart attack patients who took the extract, called Xuezhikang (XZK), reduced their risk of suffering another attack by 45 percent, their need for bypass surgery or angioplasty by one-third, and their risk of death from cancer by two-thirds.
