A recent study with female veterans suggests that vividly remembering a traumatic event might be a good way to diffuse it.  Typically, veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are given present-centered therapy, where day-to-day difficulties associated with PTSD are reviewed with patients and counselors.  However, prolonged exposure (PE) therapy, as reported by Lucy Williams in the Ivanhoe Newswire, has been shown to be much more effective.
