A new study in Finland has shown that taking corticosteroids after
heart surgery may help reduce the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF).
AF is a kind of heart arrhythmia that can increase patients' risk
of stroke and other complications following cardiac surgery.
Researchers found that patients who were given the corticosteroid
hydrocortisone after heart surgery reduced their AF risk by 37
percent over those who took a placebo.
